Flat Rate Water/Sewer - FAQ

Flat Rate Water Bills:

How often will I receive my residential water and sewer bill?

Flat rate water is billed semi-annually (twice a year). The first bill is issued in January and due on last business day in January. This covers the period from January 1st to June 30th. The second bill is issues in July and due last business day in July and covers the period from July 1st to December 31st.

How is a flat rate water account charged?

Is it based on how many rooms are within the house or within each unit.
What is considered a room?

Any habitable room counts: bedrooms, kitchen, living room, dining room, office, recreational room, family room, etc.
Non habitable rooms don’t count such as bathrooms, closets, halls, corridors, storage rooms, utility rooms (workshops, washer & Dryer, electrical room, furnace room, etc).

Would I benefit being on a water meter if I live alone or if it is just my spouse and I?

Residents that own a home with a large number of rooms (5 or more) or multiple units can potentially benefit from being on a water meter if they are careful with their water consumptions. Due to the minimum charge of a meter, being on a water meter is very close to the cost of a 4 bedroom home therefore homes of 4 bedrooms or less would not benefit.

How can I pay my semi-annual water bill?

- Service Timmins (in person),
- On-line banking,
- Pre-Authorized Payment Plan 3 options – monthly (15th of the month or last business day) or on Installment due date,
- Banking Institutions,
- Post-dated cheque,
- Drop Box outside City hall.

What is a Pre-Authorized Payment Plan?

Pre-Authorized payment plan is when the funds are automatically withdrawn from your bank account on a specified date. There are 3 different options for flat rate water bills. If you choose to do Pre-Authorized payment plan you can choose to have it withdrawn on the 15th day of each month, on the last business day of each or on the installment due date of the bill. If the 15th falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a Holiday it will be withdrawn on the following business day. So if it falls on a Sunday it will be withdrawn on the following Monday.

When you choose the Installment due date the total amount owing will be withdrawn automatically from your bank account on the due date. You will know the exact amount in advance because your water bill is sent to before the date your payment is withdrawn from your bank account.

Yes we will allow it once but we won’t continually do it throughout the year. If you decide you want a different PAP option you will require to fill out a new form.

I am going away for an extended period of time. What can I do about my water bill?

You can choose to have it paid through Pre-authorized payment, prepay in advance by post-dated cheque or cash or debit.

Water can be turned OFF at the curb stop by calling Service Timmins at 705-264-1331 and arranging a shut off time. There is a fee associated with the turn OFF and ON, this fee can be found in the most up to date “User Fee” by-law. Depending on the day the water is turned off a write-off will be done from the day the water was turned off. Once you request water to be turned back on, billing will be calculated from the day it was turned back on.
