The City of Timmins Environmental Services & Public Utilities department wishes to advise the public of water infrastructure maintenance activities that may affect water quality on Dwyer Ave., from Les Hall St. to Vipond Rd. This is schedule to start May 16, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

All homes and businesses in the affected area could be without water for a few hours as well coloured water and lower than normal water pressures

If you experience brown or rust-coloured water during the schedule water maintenance, it is recommended not to drink or wash laundry with the discoloured water. While it is not harmful to your health, it can stain laundry. Should this occur, it is advised to turn on the COLD water tap closest to the source (usually your laundry tub tap) and let it run for approximately 15-20 minutes or until the water colour has returned to normal.

The City of Timmins would like to advise the public that work on the Crawford St./Ferguson Rd. watermain extension will be begin Monday, May 16 until August, 2023. The project will provide reliable drinking water and fire flows for all businesses and private residences east of Crawford St.

Currently, a single line supplies water to 1,180 water services and fire hydrants to the eastern limits of the City's distribution system. When this main is compromised, flow in the area is limited. The installation of 1,275m of new watermain will provide new services for the properties adjacent to the new main and a new fire hydrant for fire suppression.

Work will be done in small sections with minor lane reductions around the work area. Traffic controls will be in place and drivers are asked to slow down when proceeding through the work zone. The City does not anticipate any disruption to water service while the new line is being installed.

The City of Timmins Traffic Department is providing an update on line painting for bike lanes and traffic disruptions on Theriault Blvd. and Jubilee Ave. The City will begin line painting of the centre turn lane lines on Jubilee Ave. by the end of the month, followed by the centre yellow dividing line on Theriault Blvd., and the white skip dividing lines and bike lanes. Once the bike lane solid white lines are painted, traffic crews will paint the bike symbols within the bike lanes.

Bike lanes installed in the conflict zones on Theriault Blvd. and Jubilee (areas where vehicles cross, merge with, or diverge from a lane of traffic) will have the bike lane dividing lines and bike symbols painted white. Public Works has decided to pause on reinstalling the green thermoplastic surface at this time. The Traffic Dept. is currently researching alternative pavement marking products that will work best with our weather, road maintenance activities, and road conditions. The white bike lane lines and symbols comply with the provincial standards in the Ontario Traffic Manual – Book 18 – Cycling Facilities.

The City’s road stripe painting truck is currently undergoing annual maintenance ahead of a busy season. Line painting is dependent the completion of street sweeping, weather, temperature and humidity to ensure the paint adheres to the road surface and dries quickly. Line painting operations are a seasonal task. The line paint we use between May 1 and October 15 is required to be water-based to protect the environment and public health from the effects of air pollution by reducing Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions.

Note on the Plan:

Sweeping Operations will take several weeks to complete. There is a lot of sand to pick up every year, so we ask residents to remain patient. Weather conditions and mechanical issues play a major role in how quickly Public Works can complete the sweeping operations. Heavy rain and subzero temperatures will halt operations.

Posted No Parking Signs Advising Spring Maintenance:

Public Works would like to remind residents that yellow No Parking Signs will be posted to notify that Spring Maintenance will be taking place for daytime operations. Vehicles not complying with these No Parking signs will be ticketed and towed to allow for Street Sweeping Crew to advance.

The City of Timmins would like to advise the public that our CCTV and Sewer Line Cleaning project will begin Monday, June 05 until August 4, 2023.

The Engineering Department is advising the residents that we will have crews investigating various sewer main systems within the City of Timmins, camera trucks and vacuum trucks will be onsite. Residents should be aware they may hear gurgling sounds coming from their toilet or sinks.

The purpose of the project is to inspect our existing water infrastructure to proactively schedule maintenance or plan rehabilitation. There are two steps in the process: the sewers are cleaned by flushing and inspected using a process called closed-circuit television inspection (CCTV). A robotic camera is inserted into the pipe at one end and drives the length of the sewer, recording any connections or defects.

The City’s Sewer Lining and Manhole Rehabilitation project is underway and will be on-going until the end of August 2023.

Sanitary sewer relining is a cost-effective way to extend the life of aging infrastructure, minimize long-term maintenance costs, and avoid costly excavation of roads and property.

During the installation of the new liner, you may notice an odor similar to fiberglass. This odor, if detected, is coming from your service (the connection that runs between your house and sewer main) through, in most cases, a dried out drain trap. It is a common occurrence and can be avoided by pouring water into the basement floor drains or any other location (laundry or tub) that may not be in regular use. Pouring water or placing a wet cloth into these locations will prevent the odor from accumulating in your home. Please note that the odor is not harmful to your health.

The City of Timmins Environmental Services Department wishes to advise the public of a Preventative Boil Water Advisory.

The City of Timmins is requiring you to take the following steps:

• Users of the water supply should bring their water to a rolling boil for one minute prior to consumption;
• Any water used for cooking/food preparation must be boiled then cooled prior to use; and,
• All water taps must be posted, indicating that the water is not safe to drink.

The Preventative Boil Water Advisory will remain in effect until the sample results confirm the water is fit for human consumption.
